Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Três Corações, October 23, 1940 – São Paulo, December 29, 2022), better known as Pelé, was a Brazilian footballer who played as a striker.

Described as the “King of Football”, he is widely regarded as the greatest athlete of all time.

In 2000, he was named Player of the Century by the International Federation, of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) and was one of two joint winners, of the FIFA World Player of the Century award.

That same year, Pelé was elected Athlete of the Century by the International Olympic Committee.

According to the IFFHS, he is the second highest scorer in football history in official matches, having scored 765 goals in 812 matches.

In total there were 1283 goals in 1363 games (including unofficial friendlies), a Guinness world record. During his career, he was for a period the highest paid athlete in the world.
